7/24/05 - Scary moment as Beers split double-header
The Beers had a scary moment in the last inning of the first game when a scorching line drive hit 3rd baseman Peter Darling directly in the face. He was brought to Kings County Hospital and was told that he suffered fractures to his cheek bone & lower eye socket. Luckily there was no vision damage or teeth knocked out or anything. He was more upset about not making the play then his injury and maintained good spirits throughout the ordeal. Peter Darling gives today's game 2 thumbs up The Beers split the double-header. Game notes will be updated later tonight.

Best wishes from the Zone Baseball League
To The Beers (specifically P. Darling) I hope all is well, and wish you a speedy recovery. If there is anything that the league can do for you, please let us know. Those who say baseball is not a contact sport are wrong. Thankfully we banned aluminum bats for this very reason. * Please let us know what type of fan you are (Mets or Yankees) so we can set something up as far as two free tickets for you and a guest.

Hey, thanks a lot, I appreciate the concern. Good job going with wood bats, I don't really want to think about how hard it would have been hit with an aluminum bat (although it was really smoked as it is). Even before this, the wood bats had grown on me, they definitely have a nicer feel to them, I think. Baseball tickets would be awesome. I don't think you're at all obligated to do anything like that, but if you want to that would be really nice. I'm actually a Red Sox fan ( ), but I like to consider myself a baseball fan first and foremost. I would probably get in less trouble going to a Mets game, though :D. My brother is apparently more sane and is a Yankee fan, so either would be cool, if you're feeling up to it. I don't want you or the league to be put in financial trouble on account of me (I have health insurance that as far as I know will pay for everything), but on the other hand, I can't really honestly decline free baseball tickets. Anyway, I'm doing alright now, I think. They've got me on painkillers so it doesn't hurt that much, it's just pretty uncomfortable. I probably won't need surgery, so that's good. I mean, it sucks that I got hit, but hey, these things happen, and really it could have been worse (and of course a lot better... ideally it would have been 2 inches to the left and in my glove :D ). But yeah, I didn't get any teeth knocked out or my eye permanently damaged, so in a way I was lucky. I really appreciate your concern, and think you're doing a great job on the league. I hope I'll be able to recover in time to play in at least 1 or 2 more games this season.

I'll be in New York the 20 and 21st, so count me in as a Gary Sheffield type hitter inserted into your lineup. I can also play every position like a natural. I love the Beers. I'll go to war with you anytime! P.S if it makes you feel any better, I accidentally hit one for their guys in the elbow with a 3-2 fastball.

2nd Game Summary
I guess I could write a summary of things the way I remember them: We won 8-1 behind what was very solid fielding, some hitting and putting the ball in play allowing them to make errors. Everyone seemed to contribute in some way. We also had three non-beers who helped out. The Mad Dogs had some chances but never were able to capitalize as a result of some clutch pitching from James’s friend (forgot his name) who got people out when it was most important. James pitched the last inning and made things easy on everyone. I caught the 6 innings which brings my lifelong innings as catcher to…6. I wish I could remember more from individual people to give credit but we won 8-1 and everyone made plays in the game so if you were at the game you did a great job and James did hit someone which we will say was pay back for Peter and I stepped on the first baseman running down the line which I will also chalk up to pay back. Mike N.

Sounds good Mike, I'll edit it and throw it up there. Javier is gonna send me the stats which his wife was nice enough to take. Here's an article by Rob Dibble about Bryce Florie, the Red Sox pitcher who got nailed in the face by a line drive: http://espn.go.com/talent/danpatrick/s/2001/0705/1222698.html Pete's injury is definately comparable as anyone who saw and heard it could Ron ar-*test*-('") to.
