7/15/06 - Beers take 1, Express take 1
7/15/06 - Beers take 1, Express take 1 The first game was a classic pitcher's dual which has been pretty rare in this league, and especially on the Beers. But Jay came through and was dominant in his first start of the season giving up only 3 hits for the complete game win. The defense behind him was strong as well. The Beers' 2 hits and 5 walks were good enough for 2 runs and to secure the win. Tom made his first start in the 2nd game and looked good despite the fact that this was his first time pitching in a while. He kept us in it for half the game and Andrew came in for the 2nd half. It was all tied up until the bottom of the 8th when the Beers intentionally walked one of the Express players with a man on 3rd but the next batter got the game-winning hit. Nigel had a good game at the plate as well as behind it going 2-3 with a walk and a run scored. The Beers struck out 8 times in the 8-Inning game. Next Game - This weekend we have 3 games. Saturday at 12:00 PM we have a double-header against the first place Knights (17-8) at Newtown HS. Then Sunday at 8:00 AM we will try to make up our game against the Renegades (2-19) at 145th St (9-Inning game). To see who's playing, check the Attendance Thread.

What do you guys think of the last play? Hindsight is always 20/20, but maybe we should have just played corners in and tried for the double play. That guy was pretty slow and his hit turned out to be a possible double play ball.. Should we have done anything differently?

Simon- 07-19-2006

I think we could have done three things: 1) Not intentionally walk anybody 2) Do what we did and walk one guy to get to that dude, who was flailing at pitches all game and was really a really, really slow runner. 3) Walk two guys in a row to load the bases and try to get the force at home or a double play. I think we did the right thing to face the weak hitter. How many IF double plays have we turned this year? 0 or 1 - it's too unpredictable. If we intentionally load the bases you have to get the guy at home. With the lead the guy gets at third on a righty pitcher, the ball has to be hit hard at a corner IF for an out. You can't rely on that. In professional baseball they can try for shit like that but this ain't professional baseball. The best odds are on facing a guy who has been sucking at the plate - the odds were greater that he would strike out or hit a ball that could be played so that the runner doesn't score. With a slow guy an IF could look back the runner at third and get the out at first. Unfortunately the guy hit a ground ball up the middle - we would have lost in any of the scenarios listed above, and there was nothing we could do to change the outcome.

also, based on my walk per inning ratio there was a good chance that i might have subcontiously walked there pesky little \"leader\". Also i couldve as ozzie suggested threw a curveball, changeup, or better fastball. We should make a thing anybody who strikes out pays a dollar and at the end the person who gets on base the most gets all the money. I would be broke but still...

I don't think there's any point in second guessing, but Simon shares my thoughts exactly. It was a tight jam, and pretty much everything would have had to go right for us in order to get out of that inning, and even then we'd have to score some runs and hopefully get another scoreless inning. You can't rely on the doubleplay, and what the fat guy hit could have been totally different if we were at doubleplay depth, if you get me. The fat guy was our best chance at a strikeout, popout, or weak grounder, which is really what we needed. He was also our best chance at a doubleplay, but I think the chances of us turning a doubleplay are lower than the chances that he hits a weak pop up or strike out or whatever. So yeah, we made the right move, just didn't work out.

its the lil pesky leader from the express
well if u guys were paying attension i wasnt on 1st base so there would not be a double play the right move would of been walk 2 guys load the bases corners and and pray for a double play ball

You were having a good day at the plate anyway if I remember correctly. We were in a tight spot regardless. But it was a good game.

liljay- 07-21-2006

i was running b4 he threw his 1st pitch yea i had a good day thanx u guys played very well also but as soon as he walked me i started to run to secondbase get caught in a run down so the guy on 3rd scores if u go after me and if u dont then i end up on second base with no double play in tact

Damn, I didn't know other teams read our message board... I guess that's how the opposition keeps beating us, by scouting our strategies on the message board. :o Anyway we (I?) apologize if we diss anybody's players on this board, we don't mean to talk shit, we're just discussing events as if it were a private forum. And we definitely do not always get the last laugh!

Andrew- 07-21-2006

Another solution wouldve been I got out everyone i faced and hit a bomb every at bat. I might flip that mental switch vs the knights. Lil jay and whoever else, be greatful you were spared

liljay- 07-21-2006

i rocked u for 2 base hits i scored ur not that good andrew so relax urself

Andrew- 07-21-2006

So why are you on the message board? You wanna be on the team? Im not that good but ill dont respect you enough to try. you are trash why dont you get on your own teams message board and asked for advice on life and baseball, or else just kill yourself. Who are you again?

MikeD- 07-21-2006

i rocked u for 2 base hits i scored ur not that good andrew so relax urself I think it was only 1 base hit.. just for the record. We usually try to keep things light-hearted around here in Beers Country. We leave the trash-talking to the other teams and try to stay with the positive energy. To us, this is all about having fun and playing the game we love, not about dissing other teams/players to make ourselves feel better.

Andrew- 07-21-2006

right of course. I resorted to that level. That chump has nerve. Anyway i will never intentionally walk anyone again, then they think they are special. Moving on hopefully it wont rain too much tommorow.

Andrew- 07-21-2006

In retrospect that intentional walk was definitely a bad decision by me. It wasnt a bad idea but i shouldve just declined and challenged him and got him out. Not to dis the nycmbl but this shit is not the majors people have to challenge people. How does a dude with one hit in two games get a free pass? If the knights recruit Babe Ruth im not even gonna pitch around him if i pitch.
