6/19/05 - Much-improved Beers lose a heartbreaker
Final Score: College Point Clippers 10 - Beers 7 It was close. The Beers fought hard and played well. But in the end, they couldn't quite pull off the comeback. They took a quick 1-run lead in the first inning and tacked on another 2 in the 2nd. New pitcher Chad Wilcomb took the ball and looked great, but suffered from a few key errors (although there were plenty of nice plays). In his Beers debut, James Wang was perfect at the plate, on the basepaths, and on the mound in relief. He was 3 for 3 with a 2 run bomb that cleared the left field fence just to the right of the fair pole. He also pitched 3 strong innings in relief, backed by a much stronger, more confident Beers defense which had by then settled down. Peter Darling broke out of a slump by going 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run. Rob Lee also contributed with a pair of singles and by gunning down a runner at home from left field. Despite strong performances all around, the Beers were just not able to catch up with the blazing-fast Clippers. In the last inning, they left the bases juiced with the go-ahead run at the dish. It was an encouraging game though, and we're looking ahead to Saturday. Oh, and OFFENSIVE STATS are up. Check the link to the left. If there are any mistakes or misspelled names, email Peter (potrod64@gmail.com) as he has volunteered to be in charge of getting the stats up. Pitching and fielding stats to follow shortly.
